Expand Chore Time to Financial Management Training with the Homey App

All families need to complete household chores. But what if you could extend chore time to a financial management learning experience? Try the Homey app!

I’ve written before about how to create a chore system for your family and ways to manage that. But what if you could expand the horizon of “chore time” beyond just getting some household tasks done? What if family chores could actually be a launch-pad for some very practical, hands-on financial management experience!

We’re a pretty techie family. And I’m always on the lookout for great solutions to regular household management tasks. So I was really excited to get a chance to try out the Homey App! I’ll tell you a bit about how it works and why it’s geared towards financial management training. But don’t miss your opportunity to win a free year of Homey access at the end of this post!

Getting Started

When you set up your household, you’ll have the opportunity to create your own parent profile for managing the household, and then add other users. You can add individual profile pictures or images for each user either by choosing an image from the gallery or by taking a picture from within the Homey app.

This app is made to be used by children of all ages. While you can enter an email for each user, it isn’t necessary. It’s also easy to switch between users on a single device, so don’t worry if all of your children don’t have their own tablets or phones. (I set up and mange chores from my tablet and my kids access and check them off from my phone!)

Adding Chores

Once you’ve set up your users, you’ll want to start adding individual chores. I preferred to do this manually as I wanted to be able to control the details and especially to add my own pictures for each chore. (My little ones especially liked seeing pictures of their actual tasks.)

However, if you prefer to use pre-made chores and images, there are lots of chore packs you can choose from to add to your schedule. Many of the chore packs are free, but some require a one-time in-app purchase.

There are a few really useful and customizable aspects to the chore set-up process in Homey. One that I love is the ability to set up chores for anybody. There are a few tasks that aren’t anyone’s regular assignment, but I do have a few children who regularly ask me if there’s something they can do to earn extra money or privileges. Now I can add those chores without assigning a person or a due date and any one of the kids can see them and complete them!

I also love the chore sharing or cloning options. Sometimes you want to copy one chore to other users. For example, all four girls need to brush their hair every day. Sometimes you want multiple children to share or take turns with a chore. You can also choose due dates and frequency of chore recurrence.

Completing Chores

As I mentioned above, multiple children can share a single device for using the Homey app. It’s easy to switch between user profiles and you can assign each child a password for access to their account. When a child has completed a chore, he or she can check off that chore from his profile.

There are a couple of fun features of the Homey app that I haven’t observed in other similar programs. One is that you can require photo proof of chore completion! When a child marks a chore as done, the app will prompt him to snap a picture of his work. This picture will show up in the parent profile so you can see if they job was completed thoroughly!

I’m also glad, however, that I can check off chores from my user profile. Sometimes I can see that things are finished and it’s easier for me to go down the list and check off things myself from my profile on the tablet than to remind the kids to pull up their user profile on the phone and check them off. I love having the flexibility to do either!

Positive Reinforcements

And this is where the beauty of financial management training comes into play. Yes, as with other chore systems, you can set up an allowance to go with your chore assignments and completion. But the unique thing about this app is that it will actually help your children to track progress towards a goal.

When you create a chore, you can choose to assign a certain number of points or coins to the chore. Why the two different options? You’re gonna love this. Points are based on a particular time frame: daily, weekly, or monthly. Coins are the Homey currency.

Is there a reward your children might want to earn on a daily or weekly basis, like afternoon screen time or weekend outings? They’d need to accumulate a certain number of point per day/week by completing chores. Points can also be required for earning a periodic allowance.

On the other hand, coins never expire. They are the Homey currency and can be saved up to meet long-term goals. Kids can save towards converting coins into money, privileges, or even items. Has your child been asking for something? Add it as a reward they can save Homey coins to earn!

In-App Bank Transfers!

One of the newest features of the Homey app and one that I haven’t seen available in any other program is the ability to connect your bank accounts and make transfers in-app! Allowances are great for helping kids learn financial management. But what if mom forgets to hand out the cash? Or what if the cash gets lost?

Now you can set up allowances to automatically transfer from your account to your child’s savings account contingent upon sufficient completion of weekly responsibilities. With the Unlimited Plan, you’re able to connect up to five bank accounts within your profile!

Helpful Emails

I highly encourage you to go ahead and try out the Homey app now! You can download it from either the Google Play Store or iTunes and use it for free with up to three user accounts. Once you’ve created a family profile, you’ll begin receiving detailed, instructive emails from Homey about just how to take advantage of all the features I’ve shared above!

And once you’re in the swing of using it, Homey will remind you via email when chores are overdue or if you might have forgotten something, like adding a reward to go with a chore that someone has completed. You’ll be walked through the process step-by-step!
